Artwork: Saltways, 2018

Saltways was commissioned by the Canal and River Trust as part of The Ring, a ground-breaking arts programme which celebrated the historic 21-mile Worcestershire circular canal that flows through the urban and rural landscapes of Worcester and Droitwich.

The artwork, a sculpture based on the architecture of former saltworks in Droitwich, was transported in pieces on a canal boat from Gloucester Docks to Droitwich in a reverse of the journey undertaken by Droitwich salt barges during the heyday of the salt trade.

On arrival at Droitwich’s canal banks and during the annual St Richards Festival, the sculpture was assembled and filled with salt from around the world (also brought on the journey) by members of the public and the town mayor.

A short film, Saltways, documents the journey.
